“I think I realized at some point that the news is bad for you…that’s one way of interpreting what’s happening in the world. And there’s lot’s of good stuff too”.

“So kind of just like focusing on that, focusing on the positive and using the context of history to keep that positivity instead of wallowing in that sort of, everything is so bad. Everything, it looks bad, but it’s been worse and it’s getting better”.

“I’ve listened to courses on Stoicism. I listened to half a dozen books on Stoicism in the last couple of years. Things happen in the world that are beyond your control. You might not control your automatic nervous system response to something, you might have an initial sense of feeling of dread or fear. But you can control how you respond to things. You can even control how you interpret things”.

Ep.5/

PURPOSE

“Gardening is instant gratification. Teaching history is not instantly gratifying because I hope students understood that in the long term. I hope it matters. I can’t tell. But you can take an overgrown bush or tree and spend 2 hours pruning it and be like. That’s different. Better”.

“Try to find a problem that you can work on, like teaching. U.S. history in school. Teaching isn’t as high status, but I feel like I’m doing something that’s valuable”.

“People have to find something that gives them a sense of meaning. It’s a sense of contribution, that you matter, that you are doing something”.
